Larger projects . . .Above you can view the results of a vulnerable BMW 3 Series E36 which the local car theives sadly decided to rob and wreck - nice folks. The car had suffered the loss of its wheels, its dash had been extensively damaged and the windows smashed. The obvious cd changer was taken with less care than a crocodile eating its lunch and on top of many trim parts missing, the body and rear axle "z-arms" were badly distorted as the nice folk chose to drive the vehicle sideways on its fatefull journey. "Oh dear what shall we do?" ... The skeleton was hauled off to www.newhallcars.com where the rear suspension was expertly rectified along with other work & adjustments - top job lads well done! The next port of call was "Roton Engineering" in Sandycroft where the old exhaust "fell off". The boys there soon got to work on the twin outlet stainless system which we insisted on having. We were subsequentley sent away as in any tricky operation there are some bits you don't want to see. After a day and a half of swearing and blasfamy we finally got the "its ready" call. The car was collected and paid for - which hurt a lot, although the job was excellent. Once we had it back in our mitts, we began to pull it apart. As seen in the pics, what could come off did come off. The doors wre stripped of glass and bits so they wre just shells. The old grubby body was then cleaned and decontaminated. All damaged areas were then repaired properly. The rear spoiler was then offered to the boot lid and as you can see in the photo would have been a better fit on a Chinook helicopter. We won't name drop as to where it came from as we've already embarrased them on the phone. "We're assured its a perfect fit. We've tried on the same car ourselves and it goes staight on." In a later phone call after much head scratching we spoke to a guy from the same company who told us "We didnt actually try it on the car as the car already had an M-Tech spoiler attached to it, so we held about 8 inches above and it looked like it might be ok." We feel these people might be better suited to suppliyng after market combined harvester strap-ons where millimeters aren't so critical. The spoiler was modified to fit the car and bolted into place. Once it looked ok, the front wings were cut out in order to fit the grilles. This is a tricky time consuming job and takes care. Once the repairs and mods were ok the car was painted in the three coat system, i.e. groundcoat (or blow through colour), basecoat (actual colour) and finally top coat (laquer finish). NB: The graphics were airbrushed on before the top coat was applied. The car was then fitted back with all its new bits, which included some very nice interior trim work. The result was six Browny points, many headaches and ultimatley one very happy customer. Oh by the way, before delivery it went to Wirral Auto Electrical for an alarm that is so sensitive a duck breaking wind from 200yds away sets off the 130 decibel alarm. People to thank . . .
As you can appreciate, over the years films and photos have been lost and some of the larger projects do date back to these early days. One of which was a Detomaso Pantera GTS which was in our possesion in 1981. The car arrived in a very sorry state and was completely gutted. It gained remanufactured body panels, a complete interior, a complete engine rebuild and obviously the paint job. The car was actually sold at BCA Farnborough where it was bought by a complete liar and two weeks later was featured in the centre spread of a Sunday Supplement mag with claims that he was an expert and had done it himself. Another massive project was a huge Winnebago motor home which belonged to a customer from Saddleworth, South Yorkshire who wanted something different and had both sides airbrushed, an area of 560 square feet. This obviously took a while. It had an Indian Chief leading a pack of pony's along the passenger side and a scene of the Grand Canyon with Eagles in the forefront on the other side. After all our efforts and six weeks work, the customer paid us in full and quoted "Its too much for me" and had it painted white. Our only compensation was he agreed to leave a mural of Clint Eastwood on the spare wheel cover. Our biggest project so far is painting the Fourth Bridge, but we haven't got the job yet...
